The game was delayed multiple times, and on August 22, 2000, Shigesato Itoi announced that Mother 3 was cancelled. Development shifted back to the regular Nintendo 64 after the 64DD was deemed a commercial failure. The game's subtitle changed multiple times: it started as Forest of the Chimera (キマイラの森 Kimaira no Mori) and was changed to Forest of the Strange Creatures (奇怪生物の森 Kikai Seibutsu no Mori) before settling on The End of the Pig King (豚王の最期 Buta-Ō no Saigo).
Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto were both producers for the game. Mother 3 was originally planned for the Super Famicom, but development of the game shifted to the Nintendo 64 and then to the 64DD. The story follows Lucas, Claus, and Flint, a family of 3 who lost their mother/wife, Hinawa.
